Kwa wasemaji wa Kiswahili, matumizi ya "the" ni muhimu kuelewa:
"The" ni kifungu kinachoonyesha umaalum (Definite Article) katika Kiingereza. Kiswahili hakina neno la moja kwa moja linalolingana nalo.
"The" hutumiwa:
Kuonyesha kitu maalum au mtu maalum (the book = kile kitabu)
Kwa vitu vya asili (the sun, the moon)
Kwa vitu vya kipekee (the world = dunia)
Kwa vitu vilivyotajwa awali
Katika Kiswahili, tunatumia viambishi awali (ki-, u-, m-, etc.) lakini Kiingereza kinatumia "the" bila kujali ngeli.

Kiswahili: "Ninaenda shuleni"
Kiingereza: "I go to the school"
